Are you struggling with small kitchen ideas?
Getting the best from a smaller space can be a real challenge. Coming up with successful small kitchen ideas requires you to think outside the box and analyse and prioritise the things that are most important when you’re using your kitchen. The hard truth is that often smaller kitchens need more thought and inspiration and sadly maybe even more expense to make them function as well as a larger space! However, it’s not all doom and gloom. With the right approach, you can turn your small kitchen into a fully functioning space that’s a joy to use and to look at.
Here are my top five points to help you come up with more effective small kitchen ideas.
Worktop space; prioritise worktops over tall oven housings. There’s nothing worse than having insufficient worktop space when cooking or baking. Bending down to the oven isn’t as frequent as going to your fridge for example.
Zones; make sure you position your sink, hob & fridge in effective locations so that you have everything at your fingertips. Your oven and freezer aren’t as important because they’re not used as predominantly as the others.
Storage; drawers, slide out corner mechanisms and pull out storage units are a great way to ease the use of low level cabinetry. However, bear in mind that you lose space over having standard shelving so consider having a combination of storage types to optimise the space you have available.
Wall cabinets; Small kitchens can sometimes look really busy and cramped when too many wall cabinets are installed. If you can spare the worktop space go for a tall larder cabinet as it will give you many more times the storage capacity of all your wall cabinets but without cluttering the look of your kitchen.
Shelving; add open shelving to lighten the room and give extra space for items you need access to more often. Shelving doesn’t have to just be for books! Consider drinking glasses if you often have guests visiting or plates and bowls if you have lots of mouths to feed.
Hopefully this short list will help you to develop your small kitchen ideas and will result in a practical yet aesthetically pleasing design.
